Viewing the World through a Theological Lens

The Price is Right!

I loved to watch The Price is Right when I was younger and home from school.  (Hey, who am I kidding, I still love to watch it!)  I would always get excited for the new cars and the games like Plinko.  When I would see a new living room set or a dining room table as one of the prizes or part of the final showcase, I used to think, “How could anyone get excited to win that?  I want the car!”  Well, now that I am a homeowner, wife, and soon to be mother - I am one of those people who now gets excited over a new living room set or dining room table.

We went out shopping last weekend, looking for 2 prints we had seen at the furniture place where we got our new bedroom which was now going out of business.  Sadly, they were already gone (and at 70% off, I can see why).  So we started looking for a dresser or chest of drawers for the nursery.  That quest took us to another furniture store, where we happened to see a china cabinet that was very similar to our dining room table.  The two pieces were over $2500 each, but had been marked down to $998.  As the sales rep came up to us, my s first question was, “Is that the price for both pieces?”  She said yes, to which Wade bluntly asked, “Then what’s wrong with them?”  It turned out to be a floor model that they were trying to get rid of, so they deeply discounted it.  We thought about it, put our name on it to hold it, and came back the next day with one of the chairs from our set.  It was almost a perfect match!

Now, three days later it is sitting in our dining room.  The only downfall is that the one place it logically fit in the room meant that we have to move about half of our crosses.  (Although I am not yet convinced that we won’t eventually move all of the crosses to the opposite wall.)  I am now one of those people who gets excited for the new dining room piece - as Wade likes to call it - a China Hut.  Once we make sure the lights work, I’ll actually put some of our china into it.  But for now, here’s a few pictures of the empty hutch and the room as a whole.

New Hair-Do!

After

It was time for a change.   I think I had been wearing the short bob since just after our wedCA Hollywood Sign HKAding (almost 4 years ago).  I wanted to go  short for the summer, and I put my hair in the hands of Shannon at Blown Away Salon.  For the last few years I had been a regular at one of the mega-chains, offering ten buck haircuts.  This time, I felt I wanted something more than just a haircut.  I needed a new style.  Several women at church go to Blown Away, and I know the owners are also strong Christians.  For the last 2 days, I haven’t been able to get it to look exactly like Shannon did, but I am working on it.  :)

Veggies and Fruit

We had our first delivery of a new service last week.  Some people at church told us about a company called Farm Fresh Delivery.  It is a company that delivers locally grown and organic fruits and vegetables to your house every week or every other week.  We opted for the every other week option, and we may adjust it once we see how much we can eat.  The first bin was waiting for us on our front porch when we got home from Vacation Bible School.  It was full of some of the most delicious fair-trade bananas I have ever tasted.  (And I used to not even like eating bananas!)

We hope that this will help us to keep more fresh fruits and veggies in the house.  It already has expanded our taste buds, in that we both ate a pluot this past week.  I almost deleted it from our bin (you can customize your bin each week before it is delivered), since I didn’t know what it was.  Then I looked it up on Google, and found out it was a cross between a plum and an apricot.  It was tasty - very juicy and sweet!  Now we just have to put the reusable bin back on our porch next week, and they will replace it with a new bin full of wonderful fresh food!

The other neat thing about this service is that we can get groceries from them as well, such as fresh baked breads, yogurt, cheese, eggs and meat.  It again all comes from local farmers and artisans.  We’ll have to try that soon and let you know how it goes!  The youth director I share an office with says she hardly has to go to the grocery store anymore!  Sounds like a good plan to me.  :)
